INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE DEFINITION OF I.C ENGINE TERMS |
- EXHAUST MANIFOLD : EXHAUST MANIFOLD MADE UP OF
CAST IRON OR STAINLESS STEEL .IT COLLECTS ENGINE EXHAUST GASSES FROM
MULTIPLE CYLINDER AND TRANSFER IT INTO THE EXHAUST .EXHAUST
MANIFOLDS LOOKS VERY COMPLEX SHAPE.
2. EXHAUST VALVE : AN EXHAUST VALVE IS A VALVE THAT RELEASED BURNED
GASSES FROM A CYLINDER . THE EXHAUST VALVE CLOSED DURING THE INITIAL
PART OF THE INDUCTION STROKE . THE INLET VALVE USUALLY OPENS.
3. PISTON RINGS : THESE RINGS ARE CIRCULAR TYPE (ROUND IN SHAPE) AND
FITTED ON THE SIDE OF THE PISTON . THIS IS METALLIC TYPE SPLIT RINGS.
THE MAIN FUNCTIONS OF PISTON RINGS IN ENGINES ARE SEALING THE
COMBUSTION CHAMBER SO THAT THE MINIMUM LOSS OF GASSES TO THE
CRANKCASE. A COMPRESSION RING IS THE PISTON RING LOCATED IN THE RING
GROOVE NEAR TO THE PISTON HEAD . THESE ARE MADE UP OF USUALLY CAST
IRON AND STEEL . MOSTLY FOUR STROKE ENGINE USES THREE PISTON RINGS
TYPES OF RINGS : COMPRESSION RINGS 2. WIPER RING 3. OIL CONTROL RING
4. WATER JACKET : WATER JACKET IN AN ENGINE IS WATER FILLED CASING
SURROUNDING A DEVICE IN I.C ENGINE A COOLING WATER JACKET . SOMETIME
REFER TO AS WATER JACKET.
5. PISTON : PISTON IS HOLLOW TYPE CIRCULAR CYLINDER WITH PISTON RINGS.
AT THE BOTTOM END OF PISTON HOLES PROVIDED ON BOTH SIDES TO CONNECT
THE CONNECTING ROD . A PISTON IS A RECIPROCATING ENGINE THERE
MECHANISM IS SIMILAR TO RECIPROCATING PUMPS , GAS COMPRESSOR ,
HYDRAULICS CYLINDER AND PNEUMATIC CYLINDERS . THIS IS MOVING
COMPONENT IN I.C ENGINE.
TYPE OF PISTON : 1 . FLAT TYPE PISTON 2. DOME TYPE PISTON 3. DISH TYPE PISTON
